About Us
Dharma Drum Retreat Center was founded by the renowned scholar and teacher of Chan, the Venerable Chan Master Sheng Yen (Shifu). Currently our resident abbot is the Venerable Guo Xing Fashi, Dharma heir of Sheng Yen Shifu.
We are located in Pine Bush, NY, 90 miles northwest of New York City. The center lies below the ecologically protected Shawangunk Ridge among 125 acres of woods and meadowland. A tributary of the Verkeerder Kill flows from below Sam's Point Preserve on the Ridge down through the property, where it forms a tranquil pond (Murray Pond) not far from the Chan hall. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the grounds at any time - the center is open year round.
The center is maintained by staff members and volunteers who, together with our strong faculty of lay and monastic teachers, aim to provide a home of Buddhist practice and learning for everyone. Whether for a few hours or a few weeks, we offer a range of activities to suit your interests and needs.
We welcome your inquiries.

Words of Wisdom
Chan Master Sheng Yen
The harder you practice, the deeper you will penetrate your mind. You will be able to distinguish different levels of experience, just as you can now differentiate between seeing water, drinking water, jumping into water, and becoming water.
